With so many options available, see how to choose the right stone that meets your needs, including durability, aesthetics, climate, and specific project requirements. Continue reading to discover everything you need to know!

Types of Landscaping Stones

Landscaping stones vary widely in type, color, and texture, and each type has its own unique characteristics. Below are the most common types:

  • Granite
  • Limestone
  • Slate
  • Fieldstone
  • River rock

High-traffic areas need stone that resists wear and holds up under weight. Wet areas need stone with a textured, slip-resistant surface. Retaining walls need dense, strong stone that can handle soil pressure and water.

Granite is harder and more scratch-resistant, making it a good choice for driveways or steps. Limestone is softer and easier to cut, but it can stain or etch in acidic soil or around pools. If you are building a fire pit or an outdoor kitchen, choose stone that can handle heat without cracking.

Budget for More Than the Stone Itself

Stone is priced by the square foot or by the pallet, but the purchase price is only part of the total cost. Delivery, base material, cutting, sealing, and installation labor all add up. Large, thick pieces weigh more and may require heavy equipment to move.

If your yard has limited access, moving pallets of stone by hand can quickly raise labor costs. Before ordering, review a contractor hardscape material guide to see how freight, pallet weight, breakage, and access issues change your final price. Cheaper stone that arrives cracked or inconsistent can end up costing more than a higher-quality local option.

Choose Colors and Textures That Fit the Design

Stone should feel like it belongs in your landscape. Warm earth tones like browns, tans, and rusts suit rustic or traditional homes. Cool grays, blues, and blacks work well with modern or minimalist designs. Natural variation is part of the appeal, but the overall palette should stay consistent.

For texture, a tumbled stone has rounded edges and a soft, aged look. A thermal finish is rough and slip-resistant, which makes it useful around pools. A honed finish is smooth but not glossy, while polished stone is shiny and better suited for indoor use or very low-traffic outdoor areas.

Check Availability and Long-Term Maintenance

Even the perfect stone is useless if you cannot get enough of it. Natural stone comes from specific quarries, and some colors or sizes are only available at certain times. Manufactured stone is more consistent and widely available, but it may not have the same lifespan as natural stone.

If your project is large, ask your supplier about lot numbers and dye lots. Maintenance should affect your decision.

Some stones need periodic sealing to resist stains around grills or dining areas. Others develop a natural patina and need almost no care. For a low-maintenance landscape, choose stone that weathers well without sealing.

Let Color and Texture Guide Your Final Choice

Once you find a few stones that meet your practical needs, let color and texture make the final decision. A well-chosen stone will keep looking good for decades.
